A century ago, with the vineyards of Champagne devastated in the Great War, Reims-based enologist, LUCIEN CHARLEMAGNE came to the village of Angouleme in the Charentes (Cognac) region, where the clay-limestone soils are 85% similar to those in Champagne. Here he grew Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes and used the Method Champenoise (now called Method Traditional) to produce traditional premium sparkling wine in the style that he knew best. He had the good fortune of finding and acquiring a former limestone quarry for his caves. At 15 meters underground, it has the perfect conditions for fermentation and aging and it remains to this day, the heart of the estate.
